On March 23, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published a list of objectives for 2018, which cumulatively aim to foster development and standardization in the technology sector, among other targets.

The list begins with the goal of establishing a “National Blockchain and Distributed Accounting Technology Standardization Committee.”

While plans to form the committee had been revealed previously, the MIIT’s announcement appears to provide further information as to the group’s responsibilities. According to the document, the ministry intends for the committee to recommend standards concerning “blockchain reference architectures, data format specifications, interoperability, and smart contracts.”

The MIIT issued another announcement on March 23 relating that the day before, it had hosted a forum on industrial use cases for blockchain technology. The ministry’s Department of Information Technology and Software Services will continue exploring the topic, the press release said.

Last week, it emerged that an investment group affiliated with the Chinese government had hatched plans to establish a so-called “International Blockchain Investment and Development Center.”
